TRANSIT ORIENTED CORRIDORS
Location: Greater Montreal Area, Canada
Project Objective: To provide a framework for the development of Transit Oriented Corridors (TOC), as mandated by the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM).
The project required the categorization and development of a typology for the 32 structuring transit corridors in the CMM, elaboration of an intervention guide for one of the corridor typologies and the development of a strategic action plan for one specific corridor. Transit Oriented Development (TOD) has gained some traction since the nineties, inspiring urban planners and designers to focus on creating environments that are conducive to pedestrian activity. This is
achieved through landuse and zoning changes, increased density as well as the reconfiguration of the built environment. In the Plan métropolitain d’amémagement et de développement (PMAD), the CMM stated its vision for the Greater Montreal Area to be a more attractive, competitive and sustainable region.
While there are guidelines for TODs, Transit Oriented Corridors TOCs are a relatively new concept. This project is unique in that it dealt with applying TOD principles along a structuring transit corridor. This project is comprised of three phases; first is the categorization and development of typologies of structuring transit corridors in the CMM, second is
the elaboration of an intervention guide for one typology and third is the developmentof a strategic action plan for one of the corridors.

In the PMAD, 32 structuring transit corridors are identified that the CMM wishes to develop in a TOD-fashion. We used a two-step cluster analysis based on socioeconomic data and characteristics of the built environment to classify these corridors into 5 typologies.
