[SPACE SYNTAX]
Course: Urban Design

Introduction

Cities are highly complex settlements comprised of multiple components that are connected through an intricate web of interrelations. Studies of urban morphology focus on the relational property of the various elements within the urban network (Baran et al. 2008). It is believed that the built environment reciprocally influences human behaviour(Hillier 1996). In the past few decades, the question of how the urban environment affects travel behaviour has become the subject of various studies (Boarnet & Randall 2001). One of the theories that explores this dialectic is space syntax theory, which asserts that spatial configuration impacts movement patterns (Hillier & Hanson 1984; Peponis, Rossi & Rashid 1997).
